North Texas LTL, National TL and intermodal drayage from Dallas-Fort Worth railroads to Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas
A virtual fixture in North Texas since the late 1960’s, Southwest Freight
today
provides a wide array of services and yet is still what could be considered
a niche carrier.
In
2005 the firm operates from two locations in the Dallas area. One, a 40,000
sq. ft. facility surrounded by a 10 acre container yard, focuses on the
international side of the business and houses the company’s administrative
staff. Customs bonded, this warehouse is used for container stripping and
stuffing, transloading, limited short-term warehousing, retail distribution
and
special projects. The
container yard holds up to 500 units and is used both by importers and ocean
carriers and is located across the street from the Union Pacific Intermodal
Center.
Southwest Freight’s trucking operation is also domiciled at this location. Some 120 tractors are dispatched daily for a variety of assignments ranging from local LTL to intermodal drayage to long haul truckload.
Southwest Freight's second location is a newly opened 120,000 square foot warehouse in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie. While its primary function is to serve as a cross-dock for CompUSA and to warehouse and process U. S. Customs bonded freight, the building will be utilized however it can for public warehousing, special projects, fulfillment, transloading and for other customer needs that might surface. The company also has the option to expand to additional space next door.
In recent years the company has also been providing yard spotting and warehouse shuttle services to national companies with large distribution centers in the Dallas area. Taking advantage of these services are JCPenney, Kraft Foods, Nestle USA, Radio Shack and McCormick Spices among others.
Southwest Freight is a charter DACA member whose founder, Ira Jones, was a key player in the formation of DACA in 1971. Today the company is wholly owned by Rich Eberhart, a 23 year Southwest veteran and Bob Luchsinger, who joined the company right out of college in 1971.
Eberhart and Luchsinger are particularly proud of the long-term relationships the firm has with many of its accounts and the low turnover rate of employees, particularly in management. “Most of the steamship lines we services have been with us for 15 years or more,” says Eberhart. “And we’ve done business with JCPenney for over 25 years.”
Flexibility is an important ingredient in the way Southwest Freight does business. Much of the internal paperwork flow and billing formats are done to customer specification. Pricing is specifically tailored to customer requirements. Operationally, “we are not afraid to deviate from the norm to serve our customers,” says Eberhart.
Whatever Southwest Freight does, it seems to do right. And people have noticed. In 1996, the company was named one of five finalists for the International Business Achievement Award by the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Eberhart and Luchsinger like to think that innovative, steady, and above all customer oriented, are expressions that best articulate the firm’s reputation. If a track record can guarantee a future then this company should be around for the long haul.
